CIS Update - Autumn/Winter 2005

BIOSIS Previews® added to CIS

Thomson Scientific has added the BIOSIS Previews collection of journals to the extensive collection of information sources searched by Custom Information Services (CIS). This addition of 2,100 unique journals brings the coverage for CIS searching up to more than 10,800 journals.

CIS is proud to incorporate this unique collection of journals into its service. BIOSIS Previews contains high quality research information for the life sciences industry, covering disciplines such as ecology, botany, veterinary science, genetics, agriculture, and related areas such as instrumentation and methods.

The BIOSIS Previews collection is the most comprehensive source of references to national and international meetings, conferences, and symposia available to the life sciences industry. Over 160,000 citations, from approximately 1,250 reviewed meetings, are added annually.

BIOSIS Previews also offers comprehensive indexing of major medical and life science conferences each year, and covers the pre-clinical information found in basic biological symposia and workshops.

For more information on how the addition of BIOSIS Previews can enhance your profiles or coverage, please speak to your CIS Client Manager or email TS.CISEnquiries@thomson.com

Get more from your data with Derwent AnalyticsSM

CIS clients can benefit from a wide range of value-added options to the regular CIS service, including use of Derwent Analytics. This key data visualization tool helps you get more out of CIS data by conducting further analysis. For example, you can easily identify clusters of information related to adverse events for a particular drug.

Raw data from CIS can be inputted into Derwent Analytics, which can show each field separately. This information can then be furthered organized into ranked lists. These can merge all entries for a single topic, such as a company or product name, while keeping the original data intact. Any two fields can be compared as a co-occurrence matrix, such as adverse effects versus a drug.

Data mapping or auto-correlation can produce a map showing terms that commonly appear together, for instance a network of authors publishing together. A further correlation—cross-correlation—can show which authors are working in the same field, but not collaborating together.

Derwent Analytics can be used by departments throughout an organization, via CIS , to help ensure a total return on your investment. To find out how you can access this valuable software, please contact your CIS representative or email TS.CISEnquiries@thomson.com

CIS announces a new way to output data (E2B)

Because of national and international agreements and regulations, individual case safety reports of adverse drug reactions and adverse events need to be transmitted to the relevant regulatory authorities around the world. Now CIS offers an additional output in E2B format, which will enable easy upload into a drug safety database and ensure that regulatory departments are ready for the next step of active query follow-up.

The transmission of such individual case safety reports historically relied on paper-based formats (e.g., yellow cards, Council for the International Organizations of Medical Sciences (CIOMS) forms, MedWatch) or electronic media (e.g. within pharmaceutical companies, or with WHO), usually by online access, tape, or file transfer. Considering the large number of potential participants in a world-wide exchange of information, there was a need for an electronic format capable of accommodating direct database to database transmission using message transfers. Successful electronic transmission of information relies on the definition of common data elements and standard transmission procedures to be specified by the ICH Electronic Standards for the Transfer of Regulatory Information (ESTRI) Expert Working Group (M2).

CIS has answered this need by designing a program to output a client’s current data into the electronic submission form required by regulatory authories worldwide. In this way the need for manually inputting any relevant data is eliminated and saves you time in the reporting process.

To find out how CIS can help your organization with their electronic submissions to federal regulatory agencies, please contact your CIS client manager or email TS.CISEnquiries@thomson.com
