Dr. Mark Humayun is a professor of ophthalmology at the Keck School of Medicine
and Associate Director of Research at the Doheny Eye Institute at the University
of Southern California. By melding high-tech materials and technology with advanced
surgical methods, he is a pioneer in restoring sight to those who until now
had little hope of seeing. Dr. Humayun uses his rigorous knowledge of the structure
and functioning of the visual systems in the eye, combined with advanced electronics
and engineering to create prostheses for the eye. His current work is refining
both materials and techniques, and is moving towards a clinical application
that can be made more widely available.
