HENRY SMALL
 
 

Henry Small received a joint Ph.D. in Chemistry and the History of Science from the University of Wisconsin in 1971.  After working as a historian of science at the American Institute of Physics’ Center for History and Philosophy of Physics he joined the staff of the Institute for Scientific Information (now Thomson Scientific) in 1972 where he is currently Chief Scientist.  His 1973 paper in JASIST on co-citation in the scientific literature is one of the most cited papers in that journal and was later designated a Citation Classic. He has received the Derek de Solla Price Medal in 1987 from the journal Scientometrics, and the Award of Merit from the American Society for Information Science and Technology in 1998. He is a Fellow of the AAAS and of the National Federation of Abstracting and Indexing Services, and is currently president of the International Society for Scientometrics and Informetrics.  He has written over 100 papers on topics in citation analysis and the mapping of science, and received the JASIST best paper award in 1987.
