Q: I am unable to run my saved searches in the new version and get a blank page.
A: When this happens you may have special characters in the Description field of any of your saved searches. To resolve this, do the following:
1. Sign into Web of Knowledge.
2. Go to the My Saved Searches Tab at the top of the page and Click on it.
3. On the Open/Manage Saved Searches page, search to see if there are any special characters in the description field of any of your saved searches. Special characters are any ASCII characters or the symbols above any the number keys on your keyboard (!, @ #, $,%,^, &, *, (,) _, +)
4. If you find one, then go to that specific search and click on the Modify Settings and click on the Settings button.
5. This will take you to Modify History Settings page. Take out any special characters in the Description field and Click on the Save button.
6. You now will be able to Open and Run any of your saved searches.
Q: Can I bypass the ‘All Databases’ tab and go directly to a database, for example Web of Science?
A: You can use a direct URL in a link or bookmark to go directly into a database. This is done by adding the database abbreviation onto the primary URL. As shown below. Be sure not to include a final slash or any other characters in the URL.

Q: The new home page for Web of Knowledge looks different. What do the tabs mean - ‘All Databases’, ‘Select a Database’ and ‘Additional Resources’?
A: The opening page is now 'All Databases', which allows you to search across all of the databases to which your institution subscribes.
You may see a tab specifically for ' Web of Science' listed next to the 'Select a Database' tab. To see the list of all available databases and search in just one of them , click on the 'Select a Database' tab.
The 'Additional Resources' tab the free resources such as ISI Highly Cited and Science Watch, and more. If your institution subscribes to special databases such as Journal Citation Reports or Essential Science Indicators, this is also where they will appear.
Q: How can I access ISI Web of Knowledge?
A: There are multiple methods of access and authentication into ISI Web of Knowledge. In most cases, access is based on IP authentication and direct access to ISI Web of Knowledge is possible by browsing to http://isiknowledge.com.
If you have persistent problems when trying to access, please contact your local Technical Support Desk.
Many institutions set up remote access via proxy server for their off-campus users. Directions for remote access are usually posted on the institution's library web site. Please contact your library for more information or if you have problems with remote access.
Q: Have any changes been made to the marked list in the new version of Web of Knowledge?
A: The marked list in the new version of Web of Knowledge is essentially the same as the marked list that you are familiar with from the current version with one significant difference. You can now have multiple marked lists created for different products within Web of Knowledge.
After performing a search in All Databases, you can add search results to the marked list. This will create a distinct marked list titled: 'All Database Records'. Any subsequent records that you mark in All Databases will be added to this same list. If you then add records from any individual Web of Knowledge database to your marked list, a distinct marked list will be added for each of those individual products. For example, if you add Web of Science records to your marked list, a new marked list entitled: 'Web of Science Records' will be created.
Like the current version of Web of Knowledge, you can access each list and output the records in the same variety of formats including: saving to a text file, printing or exporting to your reference software. Each marked list will only be available for your current Web of Knowledge session. Once you log out of your current session, you will lose your marked list results.
Q: Will the upgrade to the new version of ISI Web of Knowledge affect our proxy configuration?
A: We have upgraded our Proxy FAQ for EZProxy and WAM Proxy to account for changes in configuration as a result of the new version of ISI Web of Knowledge. You can view the latest recommended configurations on our Proxy Server FAQ Page .
Q: What are the system requirements for the new version of ISI Web of Knowledge?
A: These can also be found in the 'What's New Section' available under the 'Further Information' heading on the ISI Web of Knowledge home page.
-Windows 2000 or Windows XP Operating System / Browsers
• Microsoft® Internet Explorer, v6.0 or v7.0
• Mozilla Firefox, v1.5 or v2.0
-Macintosh® OS X 10.3 or 10.4 Operating System / Browsers
• Safari, v1.3 or v2.0
• Mozilla Firefox, v1.5 or v2.0
Q: Why can't I see the ‘All Databases’ tab?
A: If your institution only subscribes to one database, you would not see an ‘All Databases’ tab. In this case, you would only see the tab for that individual product (ex. Web of Science) and the tab for ‘Additional Resources’. If you only have a subscription for Journal Citation Reports and/or Essential Science Indicators, you would be taken directly to the ‘Additional Resources’ tab. Only institutions that subscribe to multiple databases would see the ‘All Databases’ tab.
Q: What is the ‘All Databases’ tab searching?
A: For all institutions with more than one database subscription, a search in the ‘All Databases’ tab will search all of the databases that the institution subscribes to.
When you click on a particular result to go into its full record, you will be viewing the full record from a particular database. For example, in the full record, you will see: “Record from ”. This will tell you from which database this full record was pulled. This is dependent on your institution’s subscription and also from the pre-determined order of precedence that follows:
1. Web of Science
2. Current Contents Connect
3. ISI Proceedings
4. Derwent Innovations Index
5. BIOSIS Previews
6. Biological Abstracts
7. Zoological Records
8. MEDLINE
9. Web Citation Index
10. Inspec
11. CAB Abstracts
12. Food Science and Technology Abstracts
If you subscribe to Web of Science and the record you are searching for is in Web of Science, then the Web of Science record will always be the one present in ‘All Databases’. As a further example, if you subscribe to BIOSIS Previews and Biological Abstracts, and the record is in both databases, you would see the BIOSIS Previews full record.
Even though the full record is pulled from one of the databases, you can view the full record from any of the other databases where this record is indexed and that you subscribe to. You can do this by going to ‘View this Record in Other Databases’.
Q: What are the advantages of using the new All Databases that replaced ‘CrossSearch’ in the earlier Web of Knowledge version?
A: • The All Databases search is useful as a quick search across multiple content sources with little complexity
• Retrieve up to 100,000 results, automatically sorted by the journal cover publication date (vs. 1000 allowed in CrossSearch)
• Easily refine and analyze your search results
• Results are still de-duplicated but without the multi-colored product buttons.
• Arranged by Publication Date (Cover Date on Journal) rather than the production year (in CrossSearch)
• The Topic search gives the broadest possible results by including Titles, Abstracts, Keyword, and Controlled Vocabulary fields
• Display up to 50 records per page (vs. 10 on CrossSearch)
• Displays Citation Counts (Times Cited = ) in the summary for Web of Science source records
• Results can be refined by broad "General Categories" (Science & Technology, Social Sciences, and Arts & Humanities) as well as more granular Subject Areas
Q: Can I sort results in ‘All Databases’ by Latest Date or Date Added?
A: You cannot sort by Latest Date, meaning the date added to the database. The default sort for ‘All Databases’ is Publication Date. Latest Date is the default sort option in each of the individual database.
Q: In searching All Databases I am not locating all the results that I found when searching an individual product?
A: You may receive fewer results when searching All Databases in rare cases where the same author has multiple records in multiple issues of the same volume and on the same page. Generally this occurs when it is an editorial type record. The explanation for this has to do with the propriety algorithm that was created to allow for the ability to search across different products. For in-depth research it is recommended that you choose the individual product instead.
Q: Is it possible to sort by Times Cited in the All Databases search?
A: The ability to sort by Times Cited has been added to the All Databases search. You can sort by clicking on the drop down on the top right hand corner of the results set and choosing Times Cited. This will sort all of the records from highest to lowest Times Cited count. Please note that since only Web of Science utilizes Times Cited, that Web of Science records will take precendence here and will be at the top of the results after the sort. All records from other databases without a Times Cited count will be listed after the last record with a zero Times Cited count from Web of Science. These records without a Times Cited count will be sorted by Publication Date.
Q: Can I choose which databases I wish to search in ‘All Databases’?
A: ‘All Databases’ is searching all of the ISI Web of Knowledge databases for which your institution has a subscription. You cannot specify or limit which databases you are searching in ‘All Databases’.
Q: Why can't I locate the Author Finder link on the All Databases screen?
A: The Author Finder feature is still available in Web of Science, but it is not a feature that is available in searching All Databases. Go to Web of Science and select "Author' as one of the fields you want to search on. Under the example text, there will be a link that says ' Use Author Finder' that you can click on.
Q: I do not see an option for Cited Reference searching on the All Databases search page. Why not?
A: Cited Reference searching is a specialized feature of Web of Science and cannot be done in All Databases. Go to Web of Science through the Select a Database tab, and choose the “Cited Reference Search” tab.
Q: Can I set up alerts in the ‘All Databases’ tab as I could in CrossSearch?
A: Currently, alerting from ‘All Databases’ has not yet been implemented. This is something that will be included in a future release of ISI Web of Knowledge. You can currently save ‘All Databases’ searches. These searches will only work with the new version of ISI Web of Knowledge.
Q: Is EndNote Web available through the new version of ISI Web of Knowledge?
A: You can output references to EndNote Web from the new version of ISI Web of Knowledge as you would from the previous version. As before, you need to be registered and sign in to Web of Knowledge in order to use Endnote Web.
Q: Why is our institution’s logo not appearing properly in the new version of ISI Web of Knowledge?
A: If your logo in the top right corner of the new ISI Web of Knowledge appears to be skewed, you may need to supply us with a resized logo.
If you have created the logo that appears on your ISI Web of Knowledge, it will be necessary for you to resize that logo to the new size specification: 82x57. The old specification was 130x90. For those customers who have created their own logo, it is at their discretion as to when the newly resized logo is to be made available. If you have provided the logo to Thomson for hosting in the past, please provide us with the new logo at your convenience.
Please note that if your account is configured with multiple logos, then there is no change required. Size specifications remain the same at 145x50.
Q: Is Document Delivery available in the new version of ISI Web of Knowledge?
A: The ability to order documents from the Marked List only exists in the older version of ISI Web of Knowledge. This feature will be added to the new ISI Web of Knowledge in the coming months.
Q: Is DOI metadata available in Web of Knowledge?
A: For records with a DOI number, the number will be displayed in the results set only when the record does not have either a page number or an article number. The DOI number will always appear in the full record display provided that the record has a DOI. The DOI will always be available in the output (print, save, export).
